Summer in Northland

PUBLISHED: November 11th, 2009 By Lucy_lifestyle

The top of the North Island is known for its gorgeous beaches, laid-back lifestyle and historical landmarks. For these reasons Northland is also the perfect place to spend your summer holidays. Whether you want to take in the historical sites at Waitangi, lie on some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, or sip an espresso and do a bit of shopping, Northland’s the place!

Here are our picks for a wonderful Northland summer break.

BEST BEACHES:

Waipu Cove
Just 90 minutes North of Auckland (if you avoid the holiday traffic) is famed Waipu Cove. This stunning beach is popular with surfers but is also safe for swimmers with lifeguards on patrol during summer. There is also a river at the end of the beach that’s perfect for the littlies to paddle in and places to book kayaks and boat tours.

Oakura Bay
If you’re after something a little less crowded, Oakura Bay is definitely worth a visit. About 50 minutes from Whangarei on the spectacular east coast is the little settlement of Oakura. The mostly calm beach is great for swimming and the rocky headland at the west end of the beach is great for snorkeling. Best of all there’s a yummy fish and chip shop right on the beach!

Pakiri
Pakiri beach is just an hour and a half out of Auckland (turn right at Warkworth) making it the perfect spot for a day trip or weekend break. On your way out to this picturesque white sand beach, make sure you stop off at the nearby vineyards in Matakana for some wine tasting or do some shopping in Warkworth township.

TOP RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES:
Of course it’s not just about beaches in Northland. Although dubbed the ‘winterless north’, like all of New Zealand, there’s always the chance of rain. However, this doesn’t mean you need to be stuck indoors playing board games.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds
All New Zealanders must visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands. At this historical site (where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840) you can wander through the beautiful Treaty House and learn about the history of our country. It is free for New Zealand residents to visit.

Hot Pools
In the centre of Northland in Kaikohe you will find the wonderful geothermal Ngawha Spa. The soothing pools are set at different temperatures so you can find one that suits you or move from the coolest to hottest for a truly relaxing experience.

Russell Township
The charming little township of Russel (a short ferry ride from Paihia) is filled with pretty houses, historic places and a collection of lovely waterfront restaurants and cafes making it the perfect place to spend a rainy day. We recommend wandering through Russell Museum before going for lunch at Kamakura Restaurant on the waterfront for stunning views and delicious seafood.

Go Surfing:
Just because you’re staying in a secluded spot, it doesn’t mean you need to be excluded from accessing all the things you love online.

TOP PLACES TO STAY:
There are loads of campsites and motels throughout Northland but we have chosen a few of our favourite baches and hotels as they can be a great option if you’re travelling with  a group or just want something a little more luxurious.

Russell, Bay of Islands: Location, location, location! This classic Kiwi bach is situated right across from a white sand beach and is just a three minute drive from the centre of town.

Waipu Cove: Imagine hopping in a kayak at the bottom of your garden and paddling off – at this place, you can! Oceanview Cottage has stunning views across to the water making it perfect for some rest and relaxation.

Paihia Beach Resort, Paihia: For some true luxury in the north, you must visit Paihia Beach Resort. Voted one of the top ten spas in the world by Conde Nast Traveller UK, this resort boasts a gourmet restaurant under an award-winning chef and has a truly amazing pool that’s just right for cooling off after a day out in the scorching Northland sun.
